i-Probe-Supported Research Published on Connected Vehicle Road Surface
Defect Detecon
Peer-reviewed study demonstrates the potenal of Connected Vehicle-based data for scalable road condion monitoring.
June 12, 2026 – McLEAN, Virginia
i-Probe Inc. announced the publicaon of a new peer-reviewed research arcle examining how data collected by
connected vehicles (CV) can be used to detect and analyze road surface defects.
The arcle, “Machine Learning-Based Road Surface Defect Detecon from
Signal Features Using Data from an Instrumented Vehicle Plaorm,” was
published in the June 2026 issue of the internaonal peer-reviewed journal
Infrastructures.
The research, conducted in collaboraon with the University of Central Florida
and supported in part by i-Probe, found that road roughness vibraon signals
detected by the study CVs show idenable paerns associated with various
road defects. The study achieved 89% accuracy in idenfying defecve road
secons and 90% accuracy in disnguishing potholes from pavement patches
within the evaluated dataset.
These ndings support the concept behind i-Probe's Road Condion
Monitoring Big Data Analycs Service (RoCoMo-BDAS), which uses a vast
network of producon CVs to monitor road condions across large networks
connuously and passively without need for dedicated inspecon equipment.
The study was conducted using data from an instrumented vehicle within a limited geographic area. Further
validaon is needed across dierent vehicle types, roadway environments, pavement condions, and defect types.
The study team is considering future research to expand invesgaon on how CV-based data can support more
comprehensive and scalable idencaon of roadway defects. Such research could support the use of CVs as a
complement to convenonal pavement inspecons and operaons.
“This research demonstrates the potenal for connected vehicle data to accurately provide meaningful informaon
about pavement defects,” said Dr. Daisuke Oshima, President and CEO of i-Probe. “We expect future studies to build
on these ndings and further validate the potenal of connected vehicle data across a wider range of condions.”
